Spirit Trails - insightful encounters with people and planet - travel
June, July, August (13 nights)
Lands, history and contemporary culture of the Lakota. Tipi stay and riding beautiful Lakota paint horses.
[South Dakota]

Discover the world of the Lakota Sioux people through their lands, culture and history. Experience life in the environment of the northern Great Plains, and ride the prairie on Lakota paint horses. Visit the sacred sites, historical locations and modern towns that are home to one of the most fascinating cultures in North America.

For a fortnight you will live amongst the Lakota on and around their Reservations in South Dakota, with activities that include a night under the stars in a tipi, horse riding under the tutelage of Lakota horse-breeder White Thunder, watching exhilarating dance displays at a powwow, and visits to see paint horses, bison and mustangs. The excursion will also take you to see beautiful places such as the Black Hills and the Badlands National Park, and important locales like Wounded Knee and the Crazy Horse Monument, guided by anthropologist Francesc Nolla.

This trip promises to be a wonderful journey into a Native American culture that has both a past and a future, and brings you into contact with many aspects of the Lakota way of life, both traditional and modern, with the added bonus of two days of horse riding on the plains.
